I got made redundant in March 2010, and threw myself into freelancing. I'd been a full-time employee for nearly 10 years (across 2 jobs)...yet, I'd fancied freelancing since as early as 2003 (I'm a freelance artworker).
I didn't have the self-belief to quit my job and leave the "security" I thought I had, and fear held me back. However, it is the fear that now drives me.
By the time I was made unemployed (for the first and only time in my life), I had a mortgage and a 10 month old baby. I really went for it, as I didn't want to lose my house, or let my family down.
Now, 3 years later – I'm still freelancing, and I still love it! We have another baby on the way, and my wife was able to give up her job back in 2011. However...the fear still drives me! And the love for my family. I want to make them proud. That's my motivation.
